About The Course

Domestic Violence, Substance Misuse and BAMER communities – Level 1

Course description

This course looks at the overlapping issues of domestic violence and problematic substance use for women from the Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic and Refugee communities. Participants will be encouraged to explore the issues of ethnicity, gender and culture in women’s experiences of domestic violence and substance use.

Learning objectives

  • To gain an understanding of domestic violence, links to substance use and theories that underpin this work
  • To understand the impact of disadvantage and discrimination on women from ethnic communities experiencing violence, abuse and substance use
  • To know your responsibilities when working with migrant women
  • To learn about safety planning and risk assessment for minority ethnic women who present with domestic violence and problematic substance use.

Who should attend?

Anyone working with domestic violence survivors from the Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic and Refugee communities who wish to improve their response to survivors who have problematic substance use.

Course description

This course looks at how practitioners can work with the overlapping issues of domestic violence and substance use for women from the Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic and Refugee communities. Participants will be encouraged to explore the impact of ethnicity, gender and culture in women’s experiences. The course will look at particular communities and explore pathways to seeking help and how to engage and work with women.

Learning objectives

  • To look in detail at issues of ethnicity and culture focusing on particular groups and their help seeking behaviour
  • To explore in depth how practitioners can work and support women presenting with this duality with examples of models of working and research on domestic violence and substance use
  • To explore ways of managing risk and safety plans for women who are particularly at risk from extended family or community members
  • To learn from the experiences of a guest speaker working with women from the BAMER communities who experience domestic violence.

Who should attend?

Anyone who already has a basic understanding of domestic violence and problematic substance use and wishes to develop their skills to address the experiences of BAMER women.

  1. It is a requirement for this course that participants have attended the Domestic Violence, Problematic Substance Use and BAMER communities Level 1 training or equivalent course from another provider.
